This week’s questions are brought to you by Victoria Barbour
1. Have you always written romance?
Short answer: yes. Slightly longer and possibly more boring answer: when I was younger I wrote in all sorts of genres. But the stories never went anywhere, and I’ve never completed a novel in any other genre. I don’t know why this is, but for me, romance offers all sorts of possibilities. It isn’t just about love, it’s about people, relationships and how we try to battle every day life.
2. How do you deal with critiques about the romance genre?
I don’t! If people don’t like romance, that’s fine by me. The readers I have are fabulous, and more than enough to keep me going! As a reader I feel very lucky that there are so many different genres available to me, and if I don’t like a particular genre, that’s not a problem, there are thousands of other readers that absolutely love it. I look at romance the same way (except, of course, romance readers are the best!!)
3. What’s the one thing about the romance genre you’d like people to know?
It isn’t just about love. There are so many sub-genres – you just have to go and browse on Amazon to find that out. Romance doesn’t just span the spectrum from sweet to smutty, but also from romantic suspense to paranormal to historical. There are so many choices out there, you just have to know where to look. And if you don’t believe that romance can be well written and chock full of plot, you just need to go and read The Bronze Horseman or Gone With the Wind. In fact, I might just go and read them again!
