This week’s questions are brought to you by Carolyn Spear.
1. If someone could observe you writing without you knowing they were there, what strange practices might they catch you doing?
I hate to think! I’m a real procrastinator. If I didn’t turn off the wifi, you’d probably find me checking Facebook, tweeting that I #amwriting, taking a look at a really pretty dress on a retail site and….
You get the idea!
So, when the wifi is turned off, you’ll probably find me sitting in bed (my favourite writing place) either with the laptop or my iPad. My latest work in progress was written entirely on the iPad using the on-screen keyboard (even though I have a separate one). The reason for this? It was the closest I could get to handwriting without giving myself cramp. I’m a touch typist, and can type faster than I think, which isn’t always good for the creative process. Using the iPad keyboard slowed me down, allowed me to think and–I think–created a better story.
You can bet your life I’ll be editing on the laptop though!
2. Other than a creative outlet, how does writing benefit you?
Well, there’s the house in Monte Carlo, the three Ferraris and the tiny island just off the coast of Brazil…
And when I’m not dreaming, I think it benefits me in a lot of ways. It gives me something for myself, other than work and my family. It’s allowed me to meet a group of wonderful fellow writers, who are so supportive it sometimes makes me want to cry. Even if I never published another book, I’d carry on writing anyway. I love the process way too much to stop.
3. How do you feed your muse?
Ooh, I’m not sure with this one. I read. A LOT. I also people watch, think ‘what if’ and generally day dream. The majority of my life is lived inside my head. I think for me, the key is to keep writing. If you have no ideas, write about a picture, a poem, the guy you saw yesterday playing a violin. It doesn’t matter what you write about, it’s the process that matters. Creativity is a muscle, it works best when stretched often!
